What are rugby and American football?

Rugby is a team sport in which two teams of fifteen players compete to score points by carrying, passing or moving an oval ball to the opponent’s in-goal line. American football is also a team sport, but with teams of eleven players, where the aim is to score points by advancing with an oval ball by carrying or passing it towards the opponent’s end zone. There are similarities between the two sports, particularly in the fact that the ball has to be advanced to score, but they differ in their rules, playing techniques and traditions.

Players have to run or pass the ball forward while avoiding opposing tackles. The rules include tackling to stop a player, touching to put the ball back into play after it has gone out of bounds, and scrums to restart play after certain infringements. Rugby requires a mixture of physical skills, such as strength, stamina and accuracy, as well as excellent team strategy to score and defend.

Players can advance the ball by running with it (running), throwing it to a team-mate (passing) or kicking it (kicking). The game is divided into attack and defence, where the team in possession of the ball (the attacking team) tries to advance to score while the opposing team (the defending team) tries to stop the advance by making tackles, interceptions or blocking the opposing team’s actions. American football involves various formations, game strategies and specific techniques for scoring and defending.
