Frank Rouiller and Florian Voumard, two students on the Innokick Masters course (Integrated Innovation for Product and Business Development), had just one idea when they left university: to make sports and leisure equipment accessible to everyone, right at the practice site.
Both passionate about sport, leisure and innovation, they decided to combine their strengths and skills to make urban spaces more accessible, attractive and enjoyable for everyone.

Both passionate about sport, leisure and innovation, they decided to combine their strengths and skills to make urban spaces more accessible, attractive and enjoyable for everyone.
After our study trip to Shanghai, organised within the framework of the master’s programme, we came up with the BoxUp solution. Inspired by existing systems based on the sharing economy, we produced several prototypes and field tests before embarking on this adventure!
At the end of our master’s thesis on BoxUp, we won the BREF First Ventures Prize from Gebert Rüf Stiftung, worth CHF 150,000. Thanks to this award, we were able to develop the first version of our product and deploy it at the Parc des Rives in Yverdon-les-Bains (VD) the following year.
A few months after deploying our solution in Yverdon, we participated in the Venture Kick contest and won the first two rounds! Thanks to this support, we were able to continue validating our market and looking for potential new customers. That same year, we also joined the HES -Pulse incubator in Geneva for 18 months.
The implementation of our pilot project has enabled us to analyse user feedback, make improvements and start marketing it. 9 stations in 3 French-speaking cantons have been installed, and over 2,000 uses and 1,500 hours of activity have been recorded. Despite a perilous year due to the pandemic, these excellent results have encouraged us to keep moving forward! We also received two awards at the end of 2020: Genilem HES-SO Prize and Raiffeisen Sustainability Prize.
Some fifteen municipalities, towns and universities have made it possible to offer more than 20,000 hours of sport and leisure to the population (at least 13 times more than in 2020!) thanks to the 23 stations installed in Switzerland. Furthermore, the BoxUp team is moving to new premises in the canton of Vaud, in Renens, where all the stations are built.
No fewer than 60 stations are now available to the public in the four corners of Switzerland, and the first station has also been installed in Vezins, France. Another big step for 2022: BoxUp is changing from a general partnership to a limited company! And that’s not all: we have entered into a partnership with SMC2, which markets our stations on the French territory.
What a year! And it’s not over yet… 12 stations have been installed on the Emerald Isle: Ireland, the third country to benefit from our sharing solution. This summer, we recorded more than 20,000 users, 100,000 hours of use and installed more than 100 stations! We are proud and grateful to see that what was just an idea 5 years ago has now been adopted by so many people. And don’t worry, we’ve still got more than one trick up our sleeve!
