What is pétanque?
Pétanque is an outdoor boules game that originated in France. It is played on a sand or clay court. Players throw metal balls, often made of steel, at a jack, a small wooden object, trying to get as close to it as possible. The aim of the game is to place your balls closer to the jack than those of your opponent. Players throw their balls in a circle called the “throwing circle” or “shooting circle.” The player whose ball is closest to the jack or who has the closest ball at the end of a round wins points.
How do you play pétanque?
The rules of pétanque are simple: the goal is to get the metal balls as close as possible to the jack. In turn, each player, with feet together, throws their ball without a run-up across the court. Players throw from a circle marked out on the ground. The game is played individually or in teams of 2 or 3 players and ends when one player or team reaches 13 points. The maximum number of balls on the court must be 12 for each game.
